Blindsight: Neuralink’s latest project on Vision Restoration
In today’s short article, we are going to cover Blindsight by Neuralink which is an ambitious project recently announced by Elon Musk that aims to restore vision using brain implants. Musk stated that, initially, implants would offer low-resolution vision, but he envisions technology eventually surpassing human vision. The system works by implanting tiny electrodes into the visual cortex, where the brain decodes sensory input for visual perception.

Founded by Elon Musk, Neuralink is a company that focuses on developing brain-computer interfaces(BCIs). Initial models of Blindsight will mostly offer vision comparable to low-res videos. Patients might perceive basic shapes, contrasts, and outlines rather than detailed coloured imagery.
Experts have noted that such implants face quite a lot of challenges in mimicking the brain’s complex visual processing. Simulating our brain’s mechanism of translating electrical signals into images requires highly sophisticated algorithms and electrode precision.
The current state of the technology results in vision that is far from perfect which is often blurry. Also, significant hurdles remain in fine-tuning the implants to achieve better results.
